How to photograph clothes for your digital closet

A clear photo of one item makes your wardrobe easier to browse and organize. You do not need professional equipment—a phone or iPad is a useful starting point.

  1. Keep one item in each photo

Lay a garment flat or hang it up. A pair of shoes or earrings can share one photo. Avoid combining several garments in a single closet entry.

  2. Show the complete item

Keep sleeves, hems and edges in the frame. Use a plain background that contrasts with the clothing, and remove nearby clutter.

  3. Choose soft, even light

Try indirect daylight. Avoid strong shadows, glare and filters that change the color. Check that the image is sharp before saving it.

  4. Add useful details

In My Closet, choose Add a piece, select the photo, enter a name and category, then add color, size and last-worn details. Repeat for each item.

Uploading from an iPad

Supported photos are resized and compressed automatically, leaving your original unchanged. JPG, PNG and WebP are suitable options. If your browser cannot open a HEIC image, export or share a JPEG copy and try again.

Where do full-body photos belong?

Save complete outfits in Get the Look as inspiration. My Closet does not automatically separate a full-body photograph into individual garments.

What happens to my photo?

Closet photos are saved through your signed-in account’s private storage. The Color Studio’s face-photo comparison is separate: those face photos stay in memory in the browser tab. A clear upload does not yet enable automatic AI styling or garment recognition.
